Research Highlights 2014
I. Project funded under the European Commission's Marie Curie actions 'Transnational Migration, Citizenship and the Circulation of Rights and Responsibilities'
MACIMIDE was actively involved in the launching of the project Transnational Migration, Citizenship and the Circulation of Rights and Responsibilities (TRANSMIC), a project funded under the European Commission’s Marie Curie actions, which will run from 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2018. The aim of TRANSMIC is to contribute to the understanding of transnational migration, in particular by looking at the conditions for and effects of transnational migration, possibilities for the mobility of migrants’ rights to be enhanced, and the links between migration, citizenship, and migration and development. Within TRANSMIC Professor Mazzucato supervises a PhD project on “Formal and informal social security provisions between African migrants in Europe and their network of relations at home and acts as a co-supervisor for a PhD project on “Formal and informal social welfare provisions between Latin American migrants in Europe and their network of relations at home” (co-supervision at the University of Aix-Marseille, France). Professor Vink co-supervises a project on "Transnational Migration, Postcolonial Ties and Mobility Partnerships Between the EU and Third Countries: A Comparative Study” (co-supervision at University of Minho, Portugal).

II. MACIMIDE Kick-off Conference
On 4 April 2014, Maastricht Centre for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE) organized its kick-off conference in cooperation with the Dutch Association for Migration Research. The Kick-off conference highlighted the work of MACIMIDE by disseminating original research and by bringing to Maastricht distinguished scholars from other Dutch and European Universities. The Conference was organised along the four MACIMIDE thematic sessions: Migration and Development, Transnational Families, Cross-border Mobility, and Citizenship and Immigrant Integration. Among speakers, it included Gerard-René de Groot (Maastricht University), Melissa Siegel (Maastricht University), Wim Naudé (Maastricht University), Pawel Kaczmarczyk (University of Warsaw), Virginie Baby-Collin (University of Aix Marseille), Sara Fürstenau (University of Münster), Heike Niedrig (University of Hamburg), Hildegard Schneider (Maastricht University), Marco Martiniello (University of Liège) and Patrick Wautelet (University of Liège).
In the conference session on Transnational Families, chaired by Lies Wesseling, Valentina Mazzucato presented the findings of a project that measured the wellbeing of children “left-behind” while one or both of their parents migrate. Speaking in the session on Citizenship and Immigrant Integration, Maarten Vink presented a paper on the historical, political and demographic factors that structure variation between different types of citizenship regimes in Europe. The Conference was attended by 72 registered participants from 14 Universities. Apart from promoting research and exchanging ideas, the conference established foundations for future collaboration between Maastricht University/ MACIMIDE and other Dutch and European Universities. The Kick-Off Conference was preceded by a one-day international PhD/Post-doc Workshop.
